Winter is here and Christmas is just around the corner! It’s a wonderful time of year and there’s plenty to do, from Christmas shopping and visiting the Christmas markets, to wrapping up in blankets by the fire and spending time relaxing with friends and family. Of course, we want our hair to look amazing throughout our winter activities - but this is incredibly difficult!
After all, winter puts a lot of strain on your hair and scalp. An awkward mixture of the icy temperatures, the inevitable rain and wind, and the dry overheated indoors due to people desperately cranking up the central heating can all lead to dry, static, frizzy and damaged hair. It can be an absolute nightmare trying to keep your locks looking fabulous throughout the Christmas period!
That’s why the team here at SOS Haircare have put together a list of great things to add to your daily hair routine in the winter. It’s all about keeping your hair and scalp as healthy as possible to retain as much of your hair’s smoothness, strength, and shine. Most of all, what you’re battling is the near-constant transition between chilly outdoors to heated indoors - this is really what drains your hair of its moisture and shine. It’s not really possible to avoid this completely, but by using these great tips and maintaining an excellent hair routine, you can protect your magnificent mane through Christmas and beyond!
As we already said, one of the main issues in winter is the constant battle between indoor heating and outside chill. This usually drains your hair of all the moisture it needs to stay shiny, smooth and sleek, leaving you with dull and dry hair instead. So how are you going to make sure your hair stays moisturised throughout the Christmas period?
There are a few ways you can battle this. Leave-in conditioners and moisturing shampoos are two of the most common and popular methods. But here at SOS Haircare, we particularly love the effects that moisturising oils can have on your hair in winter. A few drops of hair oil each day makes sure that your hair is getting a regular dose of moisture and shine. Oils even work to seal the cuticles, helping to lock in and retain the moisture in your hair.
We tend to recommend heavier oils in winter. Heavier oils evaporate a little more slowly, allowing for longer protection. This is also great for anyone who suffers from dandruff or a dry and flaky scalp in winter! Let the oil sink in for 20-30 minutes to allow them to fully moisturise your hair. Then, you’re all good to wash your hair off as per normal and get on with your day. Blasts of dry air aren’t good for anyone’s hair, but fortunately, with a bit of added moisturising in your daily hair routine, you can help battle the winter dryness!
While you might be able to get away with leaving the house with wet or damp hair in the summer, it’s crucial that you avoid doing this in winter! Hair damage like breakage and split ends is a serious risk in the harsher months, and setting off outside with damp hair is only going to aggravate this risk. When considering your daily routine, we fully understand that the time available to you might be an issue. We’ve all got places to be and things to do, but if you can set aside the time in your daily hair routine to make sure your hair is dry, you’re bound to see the benefits!
Cold and wet hair expands to the point of breakage. If your hair freezes, you’re almost certainly going to end up with damaged and split ends! The cold can also make the colour in your hair fade more quickly, so there’s plenty of reasons to make sure you’re dry in the morning. Obviously, taking the time to fully blow dry your hair is a great way of avoiding this and making sure your hair has that extra bit of protection. However, if you definitely don’t have time in the morning, consider moving your daily hair routine into the evening through the winter.
As we’ve already said a couple of times, one of your main issues in maintaining shiny and smooth hair in winter is fighting against dryness! Winter is notorious for itchiness, dryness, dandruff and other scalp irritation. We’re sure that you’ve noticed that your skin looks a little dull and lacking in colour when you’re dehydrated. Well, your hair is basically the same!
Hydration is something best dealt with internally. What do you need to do? It’s easy - just drink more water. Of course, we understand that while this is easily said, very few of us actually drink as much water each day as we should. However, if you really want to keep your hair looking gorgeous and shiny throughout the Christmas period, you should definitely consider taking your water intake seriously.
Hydration will protect against damage and split ends, keep your hair more shiny and strong rather than dry and dull, and battle against dandruff and itchy scalps. Amazingly, a single strand of hair is actually made of 25% water! Hard as that may be to believe, it helps to demonstrate the fact that your hair needs water to stay healthy. Alongside good hydration and water intake, the team here at SOS Haircare also loves moisturing shampoos and hydrating hair masks as extra ways to maintain excellent hair hydration!
One of the best ways you can ensure that your hair stays healthy and strong not just through winter but also in the long term is to maintain a great diet where you get all the hair vitamins and minerals you need. Nourishing your hair on a daily basis with a healthy dose of goodness can have quick effect that lasts over time.
Getting all the right minerals and nutrients can give your hair a boost when it comes to its strength, shine and overall health. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to get all these important hair vitamins with just a few minutes spent each day? Well, you’re in luck, because here at SOS Haircare we offer a fantastic cactus-extract Hair Vitamin Drink, packed with everything needed to keep your hair healthy!
